Separate Botrytis Jury Also Evaluating

10th VinAgora International Wine Competition

On Sunday, the 10th VinAgora came to the end. Not only in Hungary but also in the region, the competition is regarded as one of the most significant competitions according to the numerous foreign applicants and the international jury. In 2009 the effect of the economic situation was only slightly sensible, since the number of samples was almost identical with last year’s record sample number.


VinAgora patronized by OIV (International Organization of Vine and Wine) and UIOE (International Union of enologists), is organized since 1992 by the Hungarian Viti- and Viniculture Nonprofit Ltd. Apposite to the practice of the beginnings, where as the competition took place in every two years, the wineries, aiming to gain professional reputation on the continuously widening East European market, can enter their wines on a yearly basis from now on.

This year 21 countries have sent wine- and sparkling wine samples, as follows: Australia, Austria, Bolivi1a, Brazil, Chile, Czech Republic, South Africa, USA, France, Croatia, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Peru, Rumania, Spain, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The entered 542 samples were evaluated by a jury of 58 members, consisting of professionals, in majority from people outside Hungary.

Since the Tokaj Wine Region of Hungary is a traditional site for growing Botrytis type of wines, the organizers of VinAgora have granted special significance and care to the sweet wine specialties from all over the world. In 2009 this intention of theirs formed in the shape of a “Specialist Panel of Judges”, a separate committee for evaluating the samples of the special wines category, as follows: late harvest, ice wines, Botrytis type of wines and fortified wines. In this committee only wine judges with extensive experience in the different fields of the categories, representing the cream of expertise were invited.



Besides the silver-, gold, and great gold medal winners also the Champion Awards were given away. The only task of the fourth, finishing day of the competition was selecting the champions. After having the proper gold- and great gold medal winners retasted, the different category winners were selected. The speciality of this year’s Champion Voting was that there were two champions elected in two categories due to vote-equality.

As a spot to the competition in each year another Hungarian wine region is chosen. This year’s host was Sopron, offering great hospitality for the jury and the organizers. After the evaluation in the morning a colourful introduction of the region, its wine diversity, gastronomic traditions and cultural values were successfully presented to the members of the jury coming from several countries of the world.

The most memorable happening of the four days was undoubtedly the Esterházy cake served in the Esterházy Castle

On 7th July 2009 the curious audience, showing interest towards the wines can taste not only the medal winning wines, but all the more than 500 samples entered to the competition in the VinAgora Wine Gala in Budapest, 1 Vörösmarty tér in the new ’Glass Palace’. Entry fee is required, in advance registration is not obligatory but recommended.
